Default Rear diff and axle compatibility between years and models - will it bolt in

Hey guys,

having issues with the rear diff/axle on my XJ, I have a 1996 4.0 sport and I have access to a full rear diff assembly out of a 1994 4.0 limited for no cost that I can bolt in. My question is will it bolt straight in, in other words, is the ratio the same and can I just pull off/ignore the ABS stuff and bolt the diff/axle straight in?

Are there any other factors to consider?

Cheers
Josh

Ok there are two ratios for the Xj and there are 3 diff variants for it as well.
The ratios are 3.55:1 and 3.73:1, almost all petrols were fitted with the 3.55:1, some of the late model classics (around 2000) were fitted with the 3.73:1 ratio, AFAIK all the pre-updates were fitted with 3.55:1 d35's, the diesels were fitted with 3.73:1 d35's.
There were some that were fitted with 3.55:1 C8.25's around 97.
The last diff type is the d44 but to my knowledge none were factory fitted here.

Of course that was factory fitted options, as they are around 20yrs old now anything is possible....

But to answer your question any d35 (assuming correct ratio) is a straight swap incl abs etc, if 8.25 then the tailshaft and u-bolts are required as well (again assuming correct ratio).
The only odd one is the d35 from a diesel, they use a different sized uni....

If you get a diesel d35 you can use a conversion uni to adapt 1310to1300 but you still need to address the diff ratio. But i didn't think there was and diesels in 94?
ABS if your has it and donor doesn't that means you just need to pull the brakes and axles from yours and reuse.
If yours doesn't have ABS then doesn't matter about the donor.
Never seen (or heard) D44 factory fitted for Aust market.so if the donor has one you might need to shorten the tailshaft by about 1". But it will have been swapped in.
C8.25 was very rarely fitted. In fact I've never seen one factory fitted. But certainly not in a 94 model unless again it was swapped.

Thanks wooders, yeah its out of a 94 petrol and is definitely a d35, I wish it was an 8.25!
