3.8 vs 2.8 is a very different question to 3.6 vs 2.8
what model year would you be looking at?

also, there is heaps of discussion already on this topic if you search...maybe ask more specific questions

I had a 2007 crd auto, and would not buy another crd, if I where to buy another JK I would go for the 3.6.

Unless you travel more than 25k per year there is no point going diesel.

The incremental difference in running costs between petrol and diesel is stuff-all in the overall costs of running the car. You'll lose $100-200 per week in depreciation on any late model vehicle - that's your real cost.

Just drive them both and see which one you like the feel of. Yeah, diesel is more suited to towing and is more widely available in remote areas. But you also have to put up with trying not to slip over on a congealed sludge at the bowser every time you fuel up (some can be lethal when it rains!) and I've also seen hundreds of vehicles stranded on the side of the Stuart highway for a day waiting for an overdue diesel delivery while we sailed through on petrol. That said, if I lived out there, I'd have a diesel.

Point is, they both have pros and cons and at the end of the day its pretty hard to say one is 'better'. Depends on how you like your vehicle to feel and how you'll be using it.

I agree with Lujabe. Comparing the 3.6 and the 2.8 isn't an economic one. It comes down to what type of drive you like, and if the Rubicon features are important to you (petrol only in the Rubi).

Personally I went the CRD auto and have been very happy with it. I like the way it drives (even more so with the ECU West mapping) with its effortless torque.

Drive both then make your own mind up.
