Default Re - gearing and carrier breaks?

Hi all

Just wondering If anyone could help me out with some info on re gearing my jeep, it's a 96 xj limited 4.0 HO with the aw4 on 31's with the d30 front and d35c rear running 3.55 gears.

I've heard the d35 is a junker it's not a serious of roader it's my daily/camp vehicle but what the problem is it won't change into top gear till bout 130kph unless you put it on cruise.

I've been told it's my gearing and I should re gear to 3.73 gears but what I'm stuck on is carrier break and I don't really understand it.

If anyone here could help me out it would be greatlyappreciated.

Cheers.

Hi Eagle.
Its not cheap to re-gear the diffs, and i think most XJ owners with 31's run the standard 3.55 gearing with no problem. I had 31's for years with 3.55, and i think it was in top gear by 80kph, but would drop down on hills etc.
I would suggest you have an adjustment or some other problem beside gearing.
According to my Jeep Builder Guide by Zappa (p.81), your D30 will need a new diff carrier to accommodate any lower gearing than 3.55, but you can keep your existing carrier in the back with the D35 for lower gearing.

Cheers,

Id say its got some thing to do with your vss (vehicle speed sensor) if its not shifting to 130km. The trans uses this to know when to shift up a gear. Usally it will be shifting at a normal rate with the speedo but your speedo will be showing that you are going slower therefore youll have more lag on the motor as the speed of your car is faster due to the bigger wheels. Look at the vss and computer first rather than regearing your car as you might find it a waste of time as 31 isnt a big tyre and should effect anything.

AFAIK, the carrier break for both diffs is 3.73. The carriers are not expensive but the whole re gearing process is. You will need ring and pinion gears, a master install kit and a new carrier to gear below 3.73. Backlash etc. will have to be re set.
Maybe your MAP sensor is lying to your PCM telling it there is more load on the engine than there is?

Sorry but this is incorrect, the trans uses the TSS to decide when to change gears NOT the speedo sensor, the TSS is on the side of the trans, the speedo sensor is on the rear of the transfer case, this is how it knows when to change gears in low range.

3.73:1 is perfect for an Xj on 30's, would still be better for 31's then the standard 3.55's.
As for the carrier break, in the from d30 you'll need a new carrier to go to 3.73's or deeper from the 3.55's, in the d35 you'll be ok 9 AFAIK the carrier break for the d35 is 3.07).

As for not being worthwhile that is very subjective but it certainly drives better once done, better on and offroad and better when towing....
