Default XJ mechanic in Eastern Suburbs

Hi all,

I am the very proud new owner of a 96 XJ Limited with 210k on the clock. Been looking for ages and finally found a rust free, perfect interior car.

Now I would like to take it to a good specialist to give it a full service, check everything out etc.

I'm based in Bondi so ideally Eastern Suburbs.

Looking forward to being part of the community.

Cheers,

Martin.

Hi XJ and welcome to the forum. Mate, i started off taking my XJ to a mechanic, but frankly, you are better off sitting down with a cup of coffee and reading this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/JEEP-CHER...cAAMXQkN1RzpOb

Not only will you save yourself over a $100 an hour, but you will understand your Jeep.

The Full Service Manual is also downloadable on this site for free!! Have a read through this forum at the usual problems XJ's have, and with a few tools, there is nothing you cannot do.

If your jeep is running OK, and braking OK and driving OK, then, as you have just purchased it, i would look at an oil and filter change. Also, check your airfilter and brake pads. If your brakes feel weak, as mine always did, i would recommend EBC Yellowstuff. Expensive, but it was the only thing that made my brakes work and i even swapped out for a new booster at one stage.

If and when you need parts, don't panic at the prices. You can find stuff very cheap on Ebay and rockauto.com

Cheers,

Firstly welcome...

To make things easy for yourself I recommend you identify wht version of Xj that you have, I assume by your username that you have a 1996 model? If so that is the OBD2 controlled model, the manual in the links posted for the pre-update (94-97) is for the earlier OBD1 variant.
Get hold of the parts manual, it should be linked to in one of the main stickies, the confusing part is that one of the main things people need to buy is sensors, the issue for you will be the fact that the 96 model was the changeover model from OBD1 to OBD2 sensors depsite the fact that the control system is OBD2.
Get to know your car, it'll make it a lot easier....

For any parts you buy, eyeball your existing part before buying.

I'm not fixing it, I'm improving it!
