Default Ignition Question

Hi Ladies and Gents

I have a KJ2003 CRD and just started to have a problem with the key coming out of the ignition when the car is on . It doesn't fall out , I do have to take it out .

I was wondering if anyone has had this happen before and is it an expensive fix.

Thanks for any tips you might have

Steve

Your key/keys & Ign Barrel will be worn. Common problem with this range of ign's.

We see lots in the shop, having a big bunch of crap hanging off your key is the locksmiths friend. The swaying/swinging action over time giggles the key around it the dicast housing accelerating the wear in the housing.

Good new is you can buy these uncoded kits
and and repair it your self.

But it's not worth just doing the barrel without the keys.

If you send me a good pic of your key blade I can decode it and give you the code/cuts for the wafer sequence.

Is your key the non remote type or does it have the remote buttons in the head?

I'd get either a shell you can swap the remote part over. If it's just a plain key, get your old one cloned onto a new blade cut to code.

Good advice from 67HR about fixing up the barrel...should enable you to keep your existing keys.

If your KJ has the SKIS anti-theft installed...probably does, I think it was standard on Export Models...you have a chip imbedded inside the plastic section of the key which the SKIM module reads and sends the code to the ECM. Your Remote to lock/unlock the doors is probably a seperate fob like I have.

So you need ideally to keep your original keys or you will have to have new chipped keys copied to have the same chipped key code.

I have seen some posts of owners cutting open the plastic of the key to get the chip out which they then move into their new keys.

Cheers Billwill,

We call it "chip harvesting", and supply an aftermarket shell like this with the key decoded and cut to code (back to factory tolerances)

The tricky bit is cutting the chip out without damaging it, especialy if it's a glass one like this:

Yep, sounds like you know what you are doing

Just giving the OP a heads up on what to bear in mind when replacing keys/barrels etc.
