Default Clutch Shudder

Picked my new (well mew to me) 2001 TJ on the weekend and it has a fairly significant clutch shudder in it. Basics are 4.5" lift, adjustable long arms all round, SYE and double Uni drive shaft. When taking off in first or second the shudder can be quite bad, although if you load it up against the brake there's bugger all, go figure?? Read a few reports about suspect transmission and engine mounts, so I'll check thoughs out. The clutch is about a year old heavy duty unit (done bugger all kms) and has heaps of bite, no chance of it slipping or being worn out.

I had the same issue with my TJ .
The clutch was 18 mths old .shuddered like crazy .
I changed engine mount ,didnt fix it !!
had the gearbox taken out and had the clutch plate etc checked .
turned out to be hot spots on the flywheel and clutch plate due to not getting the flywheel machined when the new clutch was fitted .
I had it machined and a new clutch installed .
fixed the problem at a cost of about $900 inc labour !!
good luck !

Yeah, hoping I don't need to do that, kinda clutching at easier straws at the moment...

Clutches shudder too if they are contaminated by oil.

Have you noticed if it gets better after driving for say 20 or 30 mins and do you have a leaking rear main seal?

When I bought mine I had the same. My car had a rear main seal leak, I read a few posts about leaking oil dripping down and causing the clutch to shudder.

Anyway - fixed the RMS leak and now my clutch shudder has gone.

Hot / cold it makes no difference. Might measure the pinion angle and stick a GoPro under there and go for a drive and see what's jumping around.
