Default desert or sand fuel consumption

Evening all.

Currently in the market to purchase a GC in either diesel Laredo 3 YO perfect service history 37k klms no towbar no offroad etc or for the same money a demo Laredo 3.6 with balance of new car warranty

Personally a love the 3.6 it sounds nice in the tope end has plenty of power and is pretty good on fuel, a few full day test drives and one overnighter return around 12 combined. I have also had a diesel Laredo with QL for the day which averaged 10.4 so in reality a 2 l per 100klms increase is easy to live with.

However and this is a big however what are they like in sand and I mean dune after dune after dune approx. 1100 of them in fact. We are planning a trip to the Simpson desert in July and fuel load is a big issue.

Has anyone done this trip and what real world consumption did you get? if not desert how about a week on fraser or similar.

By my calcs according to several reviews on the diesel they averaged around 15 litres per hundred which on the same percentage puts the petrol at roughly 19 more like 20lph. Even fitting a LR tank of 75 taking total combined to around 146 gives a range of approx. 800klms which would be pushing it. Range in the diesel based on same capacity is roughly 1100 which would be ample.

Based on your proven consumption are my figures correct?

I am very surprised at the fuel economy from the diesel. Mine has 66K on it now and has averaged 8.6 Lt per 100 Klm's from new.
I would assume that the fuel economy gap between diesel & petrol would increase in sand, because of the low down torque of the diesel, requiring less pedal.

Hope this helps.

Cheers, Craig

Hi, like Craig, I am also suprised, I have a 2012 diesel, I've had it for a year. I drive up and down 700m every day on the hwy. I have never reset the fuel economy and it sits on 9. It was previously 8.6 before I did a bit of outback towing.
I was recently told about a patrol that was averaging 20l through the sims on dessert.

Thanks Clarky

I had read the first thread which doesn't mention fuel consumption though.

The second link doesn't appear to work.

After owning and doing a bit of sand work with an '11 3.6 and '15 3.0, the difference is definitely noticeable. Probably averaged around the 13L/100km mark in the diesel, and closer to 16 in the petrol. I found the difference is exaggerated even further when loaded up or towing. The diesel is effortless in the sand

Thanks Lecheese we were working on a worst case scenario of 15 litres per 100 in the diesel and 20 in the petrol with inbuilt contingency so looks pretty accurate.

We went with the diesel and hopefully pickup next week
