Default Transmission cooler install

Am looking to install a transmission cooler to my CRD Auto.

Just looking for some tips on where to tap into the transmission cooler pipes which run to the radiator - to feed into the aux cooler. Does it matter which of the two pipes is tapped into?

Also, where did you install your cooler itself?

Thanks

This video is quite helpful actually, at least for where to cut into the transmission lines at 4:50 in.

I was thinking more along the lines of cutting into the metal pipe then sliding the hose on and clamping it directly to that. Any critisism with that?

Just a tip, not sure if they mention it in the fitting instructions....don't bypass the factory cooler......it'll help stabilise trans oil temp in cold weather....connect the aux cooler so the oil flows through both coolers.

I am not sure how it will do that, I though the same thing until I replaced my radiator and found that the transmission cooler is not connected to the radiator. There is a separate heat exchanger that is used by the AC and the transmission that sites between the inter cooler and the radiator.

I've done quite a bit of research into this and I like Wilf's install the best (derale unit mounted in nook above rear diff on JKU http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/....php?p=1278120 ) as it moves heat away from the radiator which can only be good.

I have a 2012 CRD with the NAG1 Auto and i believe the trans temp may be regulated by an oil thermostat (theres a silver brick about halfway between the tranny and the radiator which looks similar to some cheaper aftermarket units i've seen).

My intentions were to fit a stacked plate instead of the tube and fin that Wilf used (the Derale 25 row remote mount stacked plate is about the same size). And have the unit run as a standalone. From reading on some Mercedes forums i think (but haven't confirmed myself)the oil feed/return ports in the tranny case are an m14x1.5 female thread. I was going to use Earls m14x1.5 to -8an adapters and use pro-lite nylon braid to the cooler (last part is completely overkill but i want to build it to last).

I live in Qld so wasn't going to use an oil thermostat but if you need one for cold climates then Improved Racing make a highflow 145°f t'stat (opens about 62°c and stabilizes at around 70°c which is perfect temp for trans fluid), again a little expensive and way overkill but built to last.

Edit: just saw you have an 07 CRD so you will have the 545RFE transmission, the fitting sizes in the tranny case may be different.

Cheers,
Nic

Mounting it in front of the radiator doesn't affect the engine temp, you can combat engine temp by installing the severe clutch fan and the proper genuine coolant.

I have mine mounted in front of radiator and have led driving lights and a winch engine temp sits at 80deg.
