Thumbs down 2000 XJ Turn Signals On But Not Flashing

Hi guys

I've been working on the front end of my XJ and after bolting back on the grille, surround and plugging back in turn signal lights, the turn signals now turn on but don't flash. This is same for both right and left sides, front and rear lamps.

I have replaced both related fuses, unplugged, dielectric greased and replugged the turn signals lamps making sure the connections was good. I also plugged in and tested each lamp one at a time and still no flashing just constant illumination.

( When I was working on my XJ, I didn't disconnect the battery )

I've done a bit reading up on forums and it seems to be two possible causes:

1. Flasher relay is faulty and needs replacing:

Which is an easy fix, but I can't find the RHD flasher relay #5600 9711.

Does anyone know where I can get hold of one ?

Is it possible to use the US spec flasher relay, # 5602 1551 ?

2. Electrical ground issue in circuit:

Not being electrically minded I have no idea how to go about this fix!!

If anyone knows how to do this, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Will ( Frank The Tank )

Are you asking where to locate the flasher unit or where to buy one?

Hi Billnick

Yeap,

I'm not sure where it located on a RHD XJ

and where can you buy the RHD flasher relay or will the US spec relay work the same?

cheers

Just above the headlight switch. Once you pull off the cover around the steering shaft and remove the metal plate you can stick your hand in above the headlight switch and feel the box. The unit is not fixed in save for some velcro or rag, can't remember. Pull it out carefully with the wires attached.

Rockauto in the USA is a good place to source parts and I can't see why they would differ LHD/RHD. May be wrong. Wreckers would be the best.

Do the hazards work? They share the same flasher.

Hey Billnick

Thanks for info on the location of the relay!

Had a look on Rockauto they sell the relays but just the US spec ones.

I'm ordering a few parts from moparpartsoverstock I'll add a US spec relay to the order. Hopefully that will work. The description in the parts catalog describe the RHD as a flasher combination and the US one as turn signal & hazard, seems the same to me just different wording?

I've contacted a wreckers and Wooders in Sydney and see if they've got a RHD spec relay too.

The hazards work but like the turn signals just stay on solid and don't flash.

Pretty frustrating just sorted the overheating issue and wanting to get the XJ back on the road!!

Contacted a few suppliers, 4x4point had a RHD flasher relay so ordered one.

Will fit it when it arrives with new bulbs and clean & test the grounds too, hopefully that will sort it out.

I reckon the wet weather we've had in Sydney the last few weeks has had a hand in this, especially as the rear passenger door seals where leaking with heavy rain. As well as might have tweaked the wiring harnesses to turn signals when working on the front of the XJ.

The turn signals and hazard lights have magically come back to life after the XJ interior has dried out!

They are still a bit temperamental though, so will replace the multi function switch as well as the flasher relay, once I've sorted the leaks out with new door seals.
