Default Play in steering box [VIDEO]

My XJ handling has started to go a bit bad recently, having to do lots of corrections to stay straight.
I have done most other things like new bushes, etc, so beginning to suspect the steering box, looking at below video, and the difference between the movement of the pitman arm and the steering shaft, could anyone tell me if they think i have play in the box? Or does it look normal.

No ,it is not normal . Mine is the same . There is a adjusting bolt on top of steering box that has a left hand thread (or the nut is left hand thread) not to sure which one. It is a bit of a job to get to it but once you got access than is just a matter of adjusting (screwing in) the bolt just enough to get rid of the play and secure the position by tightening up the nut.
Go just with small adjustments and check steering all the way from left to right for smooth travel . If steering feels tight at full left or right undo the bolt a bit .

there is a spec how much steering wheel permissible move without pitman arm moving, usually not much more than 1cm, (vehicle front jacked), the mating teeth in the box wear mainly in the near straight ahead position position, and will bind at wider locks if adjusted too tight, juz like amlav said

Not really what you want to hear but...

I just replaced my Saginaw steering box with a reco on my ole 01 TJ and for what it's worth, I'd say mine wasn't quite as bad as yours looks.
We tried to adjust the backlash 1/4 turn first and then 1/2 but unfortunately, it made no difference to the free play in the steering whatsoever.

So now that is's fixed, can I say - nothing quite like the feeling of a nice new tight box... err, I mean, I just can't stop driving it!
