Default 2.5TD XJ Screech

Hi All,

Just driven the jeep and the serpentine belt started screeching like mad!

Now, I think its due replacing anyway but when I looked at the water pump side it was kicking up a fine mist of water from somewhere (water pump gone bad?)

It was raining but not hard so cant believe the water got in there.

Change belt and see what happens next?

If it is a waterpump, do I need to drain the system completely or will it only leak a little when I replace it? Thanks all

Sounds like WP.
If you loosen the cap on the coolant tank does it still leak? I run with no pressure in cooling system & have over 300,000km on original WP.
Once they start leaking the coolant soon destroys the bearing & so they start to bind up & the belt slips.
You will need to drain most of the coolant to change the WP. You can probably get a WP off the shelf over your way.
Good Luck.

Dang, well thats what i'm doing tomorrow then

Thanks Layback. I have a new one at home somewhere, i'll dig it out.

I haven't tried the loosening of the cap. I need to drive a fair few miles next week (so, 700?) so would probably be wise to change it even if it stops squeaking with cap loosened?

Probably too late for the cap to work. It may reduce the leak but if the bearing id stuffed it wont turn over properly. 700km may be too much & you risk cooking it

Angry

So, I didn’t get to work on the water pump until this week. Snapped a bolt of in the housing, Bottom right. Lovely.

In order to get the bolt out of the water pump however, I’m going to have to drill it out. I have some Cobalt bits and some left hand bits also to get it out.

I’ll get there but jeez it’s a struggle!

And the fan bolt has seized so I will be hitting that with the torch this weekend as I can’t drill the bolt with the fan in.

Any tips are welcome. Thanks!
