Default Hissing/vibration noise when driving.

Hi all,

In the past couple of days, I've noticed/heard what sounds like a light hiss or vibration or rattler when driving. I haven't heard the noise when in 1st gear but it sounds most noticeable when in 2nd and 3rd.

As soon as I press down on the clutch and take the JK out of gear the noise stops and then begins again when I put it into another gear.

I don't think its to do with the JK overheating but during the past few days as the weather has been warmer and the JK comes up to temperature quicker, I think it makes the noise more noticeable, quicker.

I'll be booking the JK in to have the issue inspected very soon but thought I would explain the possible issue here first, to see if anyone else has had the same or similar issue and what they did to resolve/fix the possible issue.

My JK is a 2010 Wrangler Sport, 2 door.

Cheers.

Could be the clutch throwout bearing most seem to make a whirring noise but....... they are a common failure. Suspicious that its clutch pedal related.

Hi MightyMouse,

Thank you for your response. Is it likely to be causing further damage?

Is it expensive to fix?

Cheers.

At this point, the major cost, if that is it, is the labour.

My TOB seized a few months ago and, as I have ~155,000km on it, I decided to do the clutch & presure plate as well. When it seized, it was silent when driving, but screamed like the gates of Hell had been opened under the car when I pressed the clutch in.

By the time I got all the parts, the seized TOB had worn through where it presses on the pressure plate levers & worn through them as well. Not an issue since I had those already to go in. I think the labour cost me ~$1100. It took them about 3 days to get it done, as the exhaust bolts that connect the Y pipe you have to remove are stuffed & they couldn't get it off, so had to do the work with the gearbox still jacked up under the car.

I can get to those bolts easily, now, since I pulled the front liners out from behind the wheels.

The whole story of that, with pics of the parts in question is here: Throw out bearings

As Banshee says.... its mostly labor.

Your profile doesn't have a location, but there are quality Jeep mechanics scattered around the country that most likely will be able to confirm or eliminate the TOB very quickly. Most won't charge for a quick listen

As for ongoing damage....... depending just how loud it is now, you might get days or years out of it, but it will progressively get worse.

But at this stage we are all guessing...... so see if you can get someone who knows to have a listen.

Thanks for the input guys.

Forgive me, but what does "TOB" stand for?

It's still $1,100 in labour!...
