Default 2015 WKII Spare

Hi Guys,
My son has had a 2015 GC Laredo since new. The other day he pulled into my place with a flat tyre so we figured we would change it, as you do. Once we got the spare out we discovered that it was a steel part time spare with a tyre rated for 120kph only. When we tried to fit it we discovered that you can't do up the wheel nuts. They are captive nuts and would not go on far enough to clamp the wheel up. My son swears black and blue that when he last looked at it, it was a normal full size alloy spare.

Is he correct? If so one of the various Jeep dealers it has been back to have done the dirty on him.

Regards,
Rod.

No dirty been done, that is the standard spare for the GC. Mind you I have never tried to fit one before, the fact you cant tighten it is weird. Myself I bought a OEM alloy off someone swapping his rims out with aftermarket ones so never had to be concerned about the steel rim.

Rod, we have a 2015 Laredo (from new - August build) with the OEM 18" alloys - it has a steel spare, just like our 2012 had before. Thats how they come.

Interesting that my spare doesn't have captive nuts!!
Its a simple steel wheel, and the nuts from the alloys would be used to fit the wheel - not tried on our 2015 however I did have cause to fit the 2012 and no issues at that time.

May be something to do with the fitment of whatever alloys are on the vehicle - if the captive nuts are similar to the alloy nuts then they are closed type and may not be deep enough to clear the end of the bolt thread bottoming in the nut, before the wheel is tight. Shouldn't be hard to diagnose.

Photos would help this one.

Steel spare is normal, nuts not fitting it is a bit weird though - are they the original wheel nuts that came with the vehicle?

Thanks for the replies guys.

Looks like he may have been mistaken but that doesn't explain the fact that the original nuts don't fit. We tried tightening them up until they stopped but the wheel can still be moved behind them. It looks like the easiest fix will be to get hold of a set of five open ended nuts to be kept with the spare.

Regards,
Rod.
