Default Can I make my Jeep wobble less?

Hi Guys,

First up, I'm not mechanically minded...

I have a 2003 2.7ltr WG Grand Cherokee. It has a 2" lift and Old Man Emu shocks. I hate how it wobbles all over the place and handles like a sloppy old whatever. I realise the lift magnifies the issue.

I recently got my local mechanic to take look and see if the shocks are ok. They looked it over thoroughly on the hoist and had this to say...

"It all looks totally fine, Jeeps like this are normally pretty soft. You replace all the front bushes but it would cost lots of labour. Best to try upgrading the steering damper to a bigger one."

I've got the Jeep on the market, its in great condition. Only done 178k - If I can get it to flop around a whole lot less I wouldn't be in a rush to sell it. What the mechanic has said makes sense but I'm open to input.

All suggestions welcome on how I could tighten up the front end most cost effectively welcome.

Many thanks,
Herb.

A friend who owns a Sahara recently drove my WG. He couldn't stop giggling. As I warned him, you don't so much drive it, you more herd it.

They're just like this. You get used to it.

If its all over the road, new bushes will make a big difference. The replacements that made the most improvement for me were the track rod bushes and the axle ends on the lower arms ,front and rear.My replacements were poly not rubber, they seem to give a more positive feel on the road.

If you're looking to sell you can avoid replacing the bushings because while they will help, you won't see that money out of the sale most likely. Other than alignment and caster angle checks and other cheaper little fixes I think the above posters seem to know the deal - it is a skittery ride from what they're saying!

If it really bothers you, talk to Fulcrum about putting Super Pro bushes in the lower arms and perhaps upper rear. As above, lower will give you the best bang for your buck.

You don't need to be very good mechanically to remove the lower arms yourself. Climb under and look. It's literally two bolts - one each end. You can save money if you pull them out yourself and take just the arms to Fulcrum.

Herb have a look on youtube at "how to re place lower control arm bushes WJ Jeep", there are quite a few .If you put poly bushes in you leave the old metal shell in place and drill/cut/burn the old rubber out. Also ebay has good prices on poly bushes. Lastly, the tow-in may need checking, its also easy to do at home with straight edges and a tape measure.
