My guess would be that some part of the selection system is a bit tight for one reason or another 4wd low was not fully engaged and it has spat the slector back out of engagement. Usually if this happens reengaging it and then doing some forward reverse movements and on off the throttle in a low gear will make it fully engage do this a few times and it may start fully engaging again. Worst case may have pull out the actator and find what stopping it fully engaging.

I have never personally had a wk2 transfer apart this is a assumption base on many other 4x4 engagement systems.

I can nearly guarantee you that you have not broken your transfer case moving your trailer out of the garage. Although I have never put my wk transfer to the test both my previous XJ and WJ have survived wide open full throttle to redline forwards and back in mud bogs and nothing ever fell out

There have been a number of transfer case problems noted in the WK2 on AJOR apparently FCA was /is keeping quite a number in stock because of on going problems.Do your homework Google etc then go to the dealer and ask for a replacement under warranty ,Note all conversations ,times etc with dealer or FCA.TC cases should not go bang if done little or no 4x4 ing.

Yep, I'm pretty sure you've nailed the issue right there!
