Default Transmission noise

I'm still experiencing the strange clicking noise in my driveline. Sometimes I can hear a buzz as high as 60km/h, as I slow down it becomes more pronounced as a rapid clicking noise and at walking pace it's a constant click, click, click.
The funny thing is, sometimes the noise drops away suddenly, coinciding as the engine drops to idle, as if it is freewheeling.
When I reapply the throttle, when it re-engages the noise may come back.
But not always.
Can someone explain how the transmission works in this way? Does it lock up the torque converter at low speeds?
Is 4wd constant under all conditions?
I'm just trying to think of something that could create this intermittent noise.
No problem found with any cv joints, nothing to 'see' obvious.

You said CV's but did you check the front drive shaft CV units or just axle ??? Both front and rear have CV's which tick and whine.

It does sound a lot like my old Grand when the drive shaft CV needed replacing, while Jeep said the whole shaft should be replaced I replaced it with a BA Ford CV and got it done at a CV joint shop , it was easier, all sorted while I did the shopping and I hate things with little rollers......

I don't think it's a CV joint as the noise has been intermittent over the last 18000k and quite random.
Yesterday it was noisy a number of times, but today all quiet.
I'm going to take it to the local Jeep ' specialist' tomorrow. Probably be all quiet again. I do have a recording of the noise, but can't tell where it's coming from.

Mine if I recall correctly wasn't there all the time and I checked axles, bearings then the shaft must have been in the right position when I had it on hoist as it gave a faint click when I swung on it, drove me nuts for awhile as I thought I had a dicky diff........it could be diff adjustment...

The noise seems to be more central and in front of the driver if anything.
Of course the local dealer was'too busy' to look at it yesterday and I had to book it in, after being told to come in anytime, no need to book in.
I played a recording of the noise to the service manager, he had no ideas whatsoever.
