Default My XJ false floor

Hi All,

After going to Coffs over Easter I decided I needed a false floor in the XJ to slid my tent under, it's a big canvas one so I needed the full width of the floor and needed to move the rear tyre. As a temporary step the rear tyre is attached to the false floor via a bracket and the original hold down gear fom the inside of the XJ. Eventually it will moe to the outside and some more tiedown rails will be added to the floor.

Anyway, here's the pics.

Cheers
Steve

How is it held up? Supported from the bottom? or bolted to the sides? Is it removable? I did a similar system using 17mm ply (I think) and off cuts.. just fits an old army wooden ammo box under it. The way I got it set up (When I do use it) is the ammo box against the front seats (Usually a 2 seater) with the shelf still there (put chairs/table under it) Need marine carpet though,... and a way to tie it down!

The backseat end of the floor sits on top of the wheel arches and the rear end has two legs made from pine. One slots between the rear and the hump where the fuel filler comes in (you can see it on the left in all the pics covered with carpet). The right hand side is the same with a pine leg.

Both legs are screwed from the top and have two angle brakets as well. The top is 17mm ply with angle on the front and rear to stop the carpet peeling up when I drag stuff in and out. I used 17mm ply because the floor is only supported at the edges and needs to be able to take a lot of weight on top of it. I've had me and the tyre on it OK

To take the floor out I have to fold the back seat forward slightly and then lift the floor up and slide it forward. Currently it's not bolted down but it can't really move anyway. I will put some more substantial tiedowns on the real floor and use straps to hold the false floor down as I want to be able to remove it still.

So far its held up real well and since it can't real move at all I don't expect any problems with it shaking apart. I got the tiedown rails for free from a mate who took his out to put in a fridge slide. The loops on the rails can lock in 5 different positions and work real well

Cheers
Steve

Any reason why you did not fit the tyre under the floor. This would have kept the centre of gravity lower and left way more room on top in a area you would use more and easily accessed!

I have made a false floor for my Xj also (pix still in camera) but used 1/2 inch square steel for frame and is just high enough to fit 2 long plastic boxes with lids on them. They go right up to cargo barrier. On passenger side I have a fitted box covering the fuel filler and stuff on right hand side is spare wheel. I can still remove spare with ease
frame has a vertical wall on passenger side that is against the built in box so that with false floor in there is a 6 inch wide shelf on left side the holds hydraulic jack Bushranger air compressor and an off road first aid kit.
The fitted box holds tie down straps and cleaning cloths and bits and pieces.
