Default Diesel XJ Filters

HI,

Thought I would share some info on aftermarket filters I have found.

Of course I am no expert so I can't vouch for quality but they are cheaper than factory. I am guessing they are made to similar standard and in some cases by same manufacturer. They seem to work fine for me.

XJ diesel air filter is also Wesfil W1084
XJ diesel oil filter is also Ryco Z596 or Wesfil WZ596
XJ diesel fuel filter seems to be Raycor R20 type to suit Raycor 230 series filter assembly. I have one, looks identical, just haven't fitted it yet. Will confirm when I do at next filter change. I have R20T 10 micron filter but I am waiting for delivery of R20S 2 micron filter. I figure finer grade filter is better provided changed regularly. Both same price.

I got mine from Neil at Sydney Filter Services 9672 7008 He was very helpful.

Hi,

Yes Ryco charge close to price from Jeep. Seemed to be similar quality. Interesting that wesfil also quote Audi and Mazda application for same filter.

The Wesfil WZ596 was around $13 if my memory isn't broken. I wanted scientific test :D on quality so I held them up and... Wesfil didn't feel as "heavy" as Factory Jeep one.

The wesfil air filter looks as good if not better than Jeep. Has the paper and foam two stages same as Jeep, also has steel mesh etc etc.

I think fuel filter on Jeep IS a Raycor 230 series assembly ( to be confirmed at next fuel filter change ) so Raycor R20S filter must be as good as factory, no?

Jeep charged me $115 last time for this, Raycor is $49 and includes the gasket and O ring same as Jeep. This is roughly exchange rate translation of Parker Hannafin's ( Raycor ) list price in the US so seems a fair price.

Check out these sites for fuel filter details

http://www.maesco.com/products/racor...n_product.html

For details of the fuel filter see

http://www.usdieselparts.com/pdf/pdf/Section01.pdf

In the "spin on" section look up the 215/230/245 series in the pdf file for pics, ratings part numbers etc etc.

I also use the Z596 oil filter, and have fitted a Lucas fuel filter as well. The Lucas cost me around $105 with your first filter, and replacements cost $10 for two, yes 5 bucks each. Have also got a Finer Filter in the airbox and all filters work really well.
cheers.

Thanks for the info. Just got a quote from Sainsbury's Dubbo. Oil Filter $31.25, Air Filter $24.65, Fuel Filter $123.50.

Raymondj
Do you have any part numbers on the Lucas and Finer Filter stuff. BTW the guy at Opposite Lock in Orange said that Finer Filter went out of business.

Hi,

RaymondJ, what did you do with the fuel heater and water sensors when you swapped to the Lucas filter? I gave that idea away as I didn't want to lose those. I have needed the fuel heater in the Snowy mts on occasion and water warning is good too.

I have a feeling the Raycor is a better quality filter than the Lucas (especially the Raycor 2 micron) but maybe not 10 times better.

If you really want cheap filters I think the oil filter can be replaced by a Z63 but I haven't tried it. I think Z63 is missing some internal features of the Z596 and factory filter, eg bypass, one way valve or something similar, so use at your own risk.

I have a Baldwin B178 oil filter sent to me by one of the guys at Jamboree. It also appears to be missing some of the internals of the Z596, but it does fit. I think the B178 is very cheap like $5.

I will stick with the two stage stock ( or wesfil) style air filter as air quality is very important for diesel engines. I don't think aftermarket filters optimised for flow will match them for filtration air quality.

The good thing is now there are many choises in filter quality and price for XJ diesel. Couple of years ago dealer was the only source.

Cheers
