Fixed, back on the road again.
All finished, started first go (at 2 am last night ;) when I should have been
But it had to be done, I'm in a rental property at the moment and any day now the inspection will be done. Of course, having the whole top end of the XJ all over the place in many bits wouldn't have gone down too well.
But it's all good now, went back together rather uneventfully.
The whole job only cost:
1. VRS kit $45 (brother's price)
2. Grind paste $6
3. Anti-seize $8
4. RTV silicone $12
5. Exhaust nut that "ran away somewhere" $2
Total $73
But I did spend probably 10 - 12 hours on this job (that includes the headwork, which is time-consuming).
Thanks to those that gave advice, much appreciated.
I think I'll leave the headers Gojeep, as these are good.

Hi,
Hope after all that work it is fixed.
I think I probably would have stopped short of pulling the head and just decided a rough idle was "there" until I had a bigger reason to lift it off.
Cheers

Great news Krammer and glad it is all back together and working well. Did you just do the one valve or decide to do more while it was apart?
I think you will be fine with that header and is proberbly stronger than stock now but just keep an eye on it as they tend to crack next to the new weld but it should still last 2 years or so.
Happy Jeepin and might see you again before you go back north.

Gojeep,
no, I did the lot while it was open. Complete strip of the head (new valvestem seals), then individually lap each valve with grind paste.
The lifters also got a service, as it's a good idea that they are nice and free. They are easy to work with.
Tomorrow the car is getting a resonator fitted because it does drone a bit under load.

Yea, too fussy I suppose. But I did end up servicing the lifters and so on.
Also it was the exhaust valve on 1, not the inlet (too tired to see straight?!?), as you suspected. And ALL the other exhaust valves looked badly pitted as well, which sort of vindicates the decision to pull it all apart.

If it is not too late get them to put it where mine is as placement does affect the outcome.

BTW, did you do other compression test afterwards to see what difference it made to all the cylinders?
