Default 74 CJ5 power steering conversion

Hi All,

I have a 74 model CJ5 that I have not long finnished restoring, I would like to put power steering in it, anyone out there had any experience converting these Jeeps to power steering? I notice the steering box has holden stamped on it, is it possible that a holden power steering box would fit?
Also i know older Jeeps used power steering with 3.5 to one steering ratio, i would prefer 2.5 to one like my cherokee uses and most falcons and I assume holdens, maybe I could buy an xj cherokee steering box, what ever I do I would prefer not to have to make any radical changes to steering box mounts.
Any thoughts anyone??
Thanks

I haven't done it myself yet - but I'm definately fitting power steering to my Wagon & possibly the CJ5...looking at using a Signaw box - just like TJ/xj/etc use...also widely used in Holdens.

I have a 74 CJ-5 that had power steering when I bought it.
I believe it is a holden power steering box.
Looks like a bolt-in, although he did cut a little bit out of the front chassis brace because the hydraulic tubes enter/exit fron the top of the box.
I can't get any decent pics for you now because I have stripped it back to a bare chassis. I could take a pic of the box and one of the chassis if you like ....

hey, thanks Adman, a couple of pics would really be appreciated, sounds like you have a major project on your hands, fun hey although I'm glad mine is done, more fun driving it than working on it i can tell you.
Doing any modifications to the suspension while you have it striped down so far?

my sterring is a mixture of HZ and VK commodore vintage steering components, with the odd brace in place along them.

Am heading home to canberra tonight and will also get some pics up here if you like

That would be good too Brad, I found out today my brother might be wrecking his statesman, i'm not sure what the model name is or year but it was the last of the old statesmans, i'd guess around 1980 model, hopefully i can convince him to let me have the steering box and pump cheap lol

No worries Glen. I'll get some tomorrow and post 'em.
The 5 is gonna turn into a daily driver for my girl so she can turn her TJ into a weapon. Once the 5 is done I'll start work on my 6. I have a 360, TH400 and dual Dana 44s from a Cherokee ready to go under it. I may just get it up and running with the Chero springs (SOA) and then convert to coil overs and 4-link soon after.
Lots of work ahead of me but it'll be worth it. I just bought another 6 which I'll go and get from Evans Head later this month. Sounds like the body is in better nick than mine. Anyone need anything from a 74 CJ6 ??? 258 and a 232, trannies, t-case, diffs ......
