Default CJ Gear Choices

What do you all think is the best combo for gears in a CJ

258
Torque flight 3 speed auto (not sure which one yet but guessing 999)
stock diffs
tyres 33" but longer term 35" are a chance

I was thinking 4.10 as a good comprimise between highway work and off road

I still want plenty of grunt to pull a trailer etc but some sort of fuel encomy I know this is not a real thing in a CJ

long term looking at lo max/terra low or maybe a klune/doubler to really help off road but that would be a couple of years away

I am just working at ideas at this stage to have a good idea of cost in my mind as you all know this doesnt sound like my current CJ

Gildo have you seen this site??

Dave,

The TF999 was used behind the I6 & v8 CJ's from 1980-6....then was used in the YJ & TJ. The TF904/909 was used with the 4cyliner CJ's over the same period.
The TF999 ratios are:
1st.....2nd.....3rd......Rev
2.74...1.55....1.00.....2.20

Like the TJ the gearing chose are very similar and 4.10 would be pretty much recommended for 33-35" tyres......BUT I believe the Cj uses a long pinion in the Dana30 - for which there is a 4.27 ratio available.....and THIS I believe would really be your sweet spot......
