Default strange whirring noise

my 95 xj has developed a strange whirring noise. I think I've located where it's coming from -- the highest pulley that the serpentine belt touches. (i think its something on top of the alternator??? - i'm not too good under the bonnet!).

The noise increases and decreases according to revs. I haven't done anything out of the ordinary to make it happen, just decided to start about a week ago.

Would appreciate anyones idea's as its going to the mech next week and I would like an idea so he does feed me some bullsh*t.

Thanks

Dale

Could be the bearing on the adj pully, is a $6.00 part, but have to be pressed in and out. Take the belt off to see ifs its making a noise.

Dale, loosen the serpentine belt adjuster idler pully and remove the belt, spin all pullys by hand, including the water pump, alternator and cooling fan, you will soon locate the crook one, if thats what it is.

is the adjuster pulley the one on top of the alternater??. the adjustment seems to come from loosen that big torx head bolt (which i don't have a tool for at the moment). It is definately coming from that pulley.

THat pulley isn't driving anything as far as I can see.

ANd while I'm at it.... the old girl is reaching 200,00km -- is it time to put a new timing chain/belt in?

For sure change the belt.

Don't think there is a timing chain as such - I'm pretty sure that it's off sprockets (cam is in the centre ofthe block as they are pushrod engines). So don't worry about that - just change the belt.

CHanging the belt is easy - just loosen the adjuster to slacken the belt and slip it off. Take the belt with you to Repco to make sure you getthe right length. If u can't do that, then get a reading on the underside of the belt for the length (it will be printed in mm at regular intervals. Blip the starter torotate the crankshaft momentarily to get the belt into a position where u can read the printing.
