Default front disc brake sticking

Ive discussed this issue with DaveXJ (as we have both experienced it), but wondering about others in XJs

Has your front disc ever got stuck?
Is this a frequent or inherent problem?
Whats the cause?
Fixing suggestions?

By this do you mean the caliper piston being stuck out and stopping the disc. I experienced this on the RHF and when I pulled it down I noticed part of the caliper piston (edge) actually broken off and it wasn't sitting true. Ended up replacing the caliper altogether and have since had no probs.

Not sure how or why it occured but couldn't of been safe.

RHF Thats 3 cases (including mine) now. I had mine checked out and no apparent damage was found apart from some wear.

Will be interesting what stats come out from this.

If that's your truck in your sig Dan96Xj, mud might be your problem. It certainly was on my TJ. My piston locked tight and I kissed my rotors good-bye. Needless to say it scared the bajeebers out of me and could have been a very messy situation.
I tend (well, try anyway ) to stay out of the mud these days, but I rebuild my calipers every couple years now. It's probably overkill, but it's cheap (~ $50 per side for a rebuild kit) and easy to do.

I think it's worth it to know that the brakes will be there when you need 'em!

TJB, yeah my truck...That was my theory too, but after talking to DaveXJ about his, he said he thouroughly cleaned after a day in the mud and the problem occured again? Maybe the rebuild thing is the G-O.

Hey fellas, (just a thought as I could be totally off the subject), the problem might not be as bad as it appears. My front discs were sticking, in particular after being subjected to water. Turned out the locating pins needed lubricating. After this was done problem solved.

I always found it was the real thin silty type of slop that was able to work it’s way though the piston seals. One you get a bit of grit in there past the seal it probably wouldn’t matter how much of a clean you gave it, the damage has probably been done.

As purplexj mentioned it could be something else, but if it’s the actual piston sticking I’d put my money on the grit.

Anywho, hope you’re able to get it fixed..
