Default CJ7 starter motor

Well the starter motor in my 1979 CJ7 has died. Am unsure whether to take it to an auto electrician or just purchase a new/rebuilt one. After taking the starter out it appears pretty beat up (dents and rust everywhere), and therefore perhaps a replacement is in order. Does anyone have a good replacement they wish to sell? Or recomend where to get a rebuilt unit? The engine is a 258 with the plastic rocker cover, and I reside in the Brisbane area.

Dont know if you guys have had to buy starters much but I got a new 1 of Hammonds in the last 12 mths for my CJ10 and it was around the $150 ish mark if I remember right. Thats comparable with a new starter for just about any vehicle and worked out cheaper that rebuilding an old 1.

And thats wayyyyyy cheaper than what Jeep wanted for 1 in the past. Back in the mid 80's when I asked about just a replacment bendix unit for the starter I was quoted $150 for that and complete starter was around $600~700. Ended up going to Mascot Mtrs when they were still in Sydney and got the bendix for around $25. This was when you could get a new jeep for about $14,000.

A Landrover starter is over $200

Default Hammonds

Phil,
you'll never convince me to look at Hammonds for anything.....not a bolt.
they are normally double the price which I buy my parts for,, sometimes far more than double..

Billy From my experience with Hammonds I think you may be a little harsh there but I am not sure what your experience with them has been. We each get different milage so not doubing your view simply not what I have experienced.

Just to provide balance to the comments I have always found that Hammonds are great to deal with and normally competitivly priced. As always it depends on what your after and it is worth ringing the major 4 as they can have a wide range of prices on parts and one will be expensive for one part but the cheapest for another.

The help and advice that i have got from Mascots, hammonds and USA 4x4 over the years has been more than enough to pay a slight surcharge on parts to support local guys. Yes you can import your own parts but that has many other implications and if you do it with full duties etc like the local guys have to you will find their prices are accountable for.

One example I have not spent huge $$ with hammonds so doubt I would be getting any kinda favours etc but I was chasing a rebuild kit for a 4cyl jeep carby no one had any left but hammonds "made up a kit" from stuff they had left on the shelves and sent it to me for not much more then frieght to help me out of a bind, sure I was clearing up stock that is not often asked for these days and it was not big $$ items but the running around and PIA factor would have been pretty big but they went out of their way to help. To me that is great service and will make me call them next time I want something
