Default Just about to buy a TJ...need advise on leaking sump.

Hi all,

I'm just about to buy a 97 TJ with 190k's on the clock, auto, doesn't seem like it's been off road and it's been a daily driver.

I lifted it up on a hoist the other day and I noticed that there was oil weeping out of the engine sump. Oil was leaking more on the sides around where the sump meets the block, but there was also slight leaks around the front and to the back. Some of it could be blow back from the front.

My question is, does this sound like an easy 'change the gasket on the sump and it's all over' or could it mean much bigger, hidden problem such as the main seals or something like that?

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Could also be the sump gasket.
The sump gasket is an easy change, but even if the rear main is gone it's not that hard - apparently - I haven't changed mine yet.....

Thanks for the info guys. Yeah, I hope it's not a main seal. Anyway the TJ is pretty cheap, so I guess if it's the main seal then so be it.

Cheers

Well, yeah I hope it's the sump gasket since I bought the TJ this afternoon.

I had to buy it since it seemed pretty cheap, it's a late 96 model with auto, air con, hardtop, full chrome bar work, tow bar, new starter, new air compressor, new front discs and pads, autotrans been overhauled, lift kit..... all for just 11 thousand.
