Default FAO: Turbo diesel Jeeps, "Turbo Nappy" Tryout...

Hi All,

I've been interested for a while in a heat insulating device nicknamed a "Turbo Nappy" - cause it looks exactly like one.

The lads from Turbo Australia next to my shop (Hydraulink) up here in Brisbane have been given a few of these items in various sizes to test - Just happens to be the case I was standing there when the Rep came around to flog these Turbo Nappies to the guy & I interupted and said, "If you let me try one i'm sure i'll buy it, there's your 1st sale!!" So the rep left a couple with the owner.......

Going to install it this weekend and post as many pics as i can for you guys. I've read heaps & heard heaps about these little suckers & all reports point to yes. Cant wait to see how it goes. The device will be of a great benefit when crawing around in a) the bush b) city traffic......

If anyone else gets itchy about getting one, let me know & i can easily hit the guy up for a Jeepers price, possibly a group buy.

All the best,
Stu

Typically keeps the turbo heat in the turbo/exhaust direction.
Insulating it away from the engine bay, intake, coolant, etc.

Ever seen turbos white hot? well, yeah.
Would like to see how much benefit you get on a low boost TD.

XJ Moses,

Its primary and only function is to trap the heat generated from the exhaust shell of the turbocharger and keep it in there; passing it through the exhaust instead.
Turbo cars generally run higher underbonnet temp's regardless of wether they're diesel or petrol, and as we know heat is not only "performances" worst enemy, but everything in life. Heat deteriorates hoses, plastics, paints, metals, water - EVERYTHING !!

The more cooler the temp in the engine bay, they better for EVERYTHING. I'm not doing this in a hope to get my CRD Jeep running a 12 sec 1/4 mile, i'm doing for the 'whole package' reason of protecting everything in the engine bay - performance SHOULD be noticed, but in such a low boost application, I doubt it.

Another thing to mention, regarding the XJ VS KJ. The XJ is renowned for having overheating probs & high underbonnet temps in general, however i am referring to petrols. Not sure how the diesel rates though.? Maybe some of you Diesel XJ owners out there could enlighten us ??

What a nightmare of a job. After removing the Radiator overflow bottle (still connected but held up by occy straps :P!) I got to the turbo. Removed the factory heat shield, Intercooler hose, removed the actuator ect. Attempted to wrap the nappy around the exhaust side of the turbo but she no fit. It fits around it 3/4 of the way, but thats it. Going to take it to the guys at Turbo Australia & leave it with them. Might have to move up a size.

However, I did leave it on there & re-fit the stock heatshield. These two elements together would cirtainly benefit the cause. Took it for a run & i'm not sure if its the placebo affect or not but it did feel a bit more responsive. The afternoon cool air muct have been helping too !!

Keep you updated after I get it back from Turbo Australia - should be good.

Yep - TD XJ's get hot too. Just looking at the 260Z vents on Go-jeeps site, i think i'll do that. Have to check what will be under them when they're in (water going in)
