Default Violent Shaking

Hey everyone,

I know its hard to diagnose without looking but was wondering if anyone could point me in thee right direction.

Very randomly my 02 tj gets a bad case of the shakes, it only lasts for a few seconds and seems to fix itself. It feels like a wheel has come loose and is about to fall off but when i stop and have a look it all appears fine.

It doesnt seem to happen in any particular conditions or speed and there seems to be a bit of a smell that coincides with it almost like a burning smell but i cant find anything.

Im stumped and would appreciate if anyone could help point me to some places i can look to try and sort it out as i want to get it ssorted before i take her off road.

thanks everyone

Tj's somtimes hav a condition called death wobble which can throw the car around a bit.... what causes that i dont know
but...... just yesterday my tj started wobble a bit in the front end i thought i had poped a tyre i got out to hav a look tyres where o.k but bad burning smell front right hand rim, disc brake had locked on everything was very hot, even f**king hot i took the whell off gently to check it out (one of wheel nuts burnt one of my fingers ) counldnt move the pads apart ...mmmm....sh*t opened the brake bleeder they released,
that fixed i went home rang up a mate of mine who works as a mechcanic he asked me if id changed the pads recently i said yes he thinks somtimes new pads push the brake pistons back to positions they hav'nt been to to for a while and the can catch and jam.... it might be that

Scary isn't it. That funny smell is the one coming from the drivers pants.
But seriously I think it's a tyre thing , maybe you lost some weight's or one has got a bulge in it, that's my expeirience anyway.

Azasjeep - Search is your friend - look for 'death wobble' as Jonesy stated. It generally has nothing to do with brake pads, but Jonesy has issues there.
Wheel alignment and incorrect toe-in (needs to be set at zero) are common culprits. Most of us have experienced it at one stage or another. It scared the crap out of me, yep felt like the wheels were going to come off.

Ah bugger it, here's a few links:

Brake pads have a left & right side, not a good feeling when there on the wrong side worth a check if they were replaced recently.
