Default Fix your XJ boot rattle

The boot (rear hatch) rattling about on my 1995 XJ was starting to drive me spare so I went about solving the issue with some electrical tape and two part epoxy. It is now dead quiet so if you have a similar problem this cheap and easy fix might be worth considering.

1. After checking alignment of the boot to see if it had a rear ender, I started looking for adjustment points. The boot can only be adjusted with shims and everything looked well aligned.

2. I then looked at the latch, and the striker pin. The pin had a groove worn into one side. I tried reversing the pin but the noise was just as bad (maybe worse).

3. I removed the striker pin from the XJ and using some "quick metal" two part epoxy I mixed up enough to fill the groove on the striker pin and allowed it to set. You could braze weld it and file if you have the equipment.

4. I then check the clearance between the pin and the latch on the boot. I found there was still a bit of clearance so I used electrical tape to take up some of that clearance (was about 5 revolutions of tape).

5. I put it all back together, tested the boot closing position, checked that it could be opened again, and I was done.

The result is a nice quiet boot.

Nice writeup. i think my XJ has to many other rattles to worry about the rear door tho. but cheers for the input!

having subs in the boot doesnt help with boot rattles also haha.

Good to see people contributing to the forum!

You can also stop he rattle by simply adjusting the rubber bump stop on each side of the tailgate after you have adjusted the latch mechanism
