Default Is a Provent really necessary?

G'day everyone,

Are there many of you out there who don't have a provent (or similar) - and who haven't experienced any problems?

I've spoken to a (trustworthy) Jeep dealer and he didn't reckon there were necessary if your engine was running properly.
A few diesel mechanics i've spoken to also said pretty much the same thing - just keep an eye on the intercooler hoses to watch for gunk build-up.
They didn't reckon that I could block my intercooler given how 'clean' my hoses were.
When I pulled my intercooler hoses off, they're weren't really gunky. A little grimy for sure, but nothing that could really block the intercooler.

What are your thoughts? Why is it that some CRDs have excessive oily fumes from the EGR and others don't?

Thanks!
Eric.

I used to think the same as yourself, however yesterday changed my mind! Second time in 18 months my car has been towed due to this hose.

First it just 'popped' off - this time it split.

So - I am now definetly looking at the provent.

Sorry to hear that Metro09,

I'll likely fit the provent in the near future - for peace of mind if nothing else. Whether or not it does anything for me...!

Trawling through the forums, i think it was Palla that noted that his provent didn't appear to catch anything at first, then after some hard driving it collected a fair bit of goo. I may have (so far) been very lucky that i haven't experienced any probs.

Does the car necessarily have to be towed once the hose splits? I woulda thought that a real good wrap-up of Gaffa tape would enable one to limp to a garage. (i'm asking this coz i'm goin to the high country this weekend and wouldn't fancy a tow outta there!)

80,000 odd km's with no provent here.
It's more a preventative measure than a must have, do or die, product.

On big trips, always recommend a spare set of radiator and intercooler hoses be brought along.

When Samco has produced their replacement set of boost hoses I think many hose problems will be cured...

The original Jeep turbo hoses... are they plain rubber??
When i pulled mine off, they had an orange silicone liner in them. The print on the outside of the hose said s'thing like 'Silicone lined CAC'...

I know that my hoses aren't original as the previous owner split them very early on. The dealer had the warranty claim and told me the original ones were defective. The car's now at 130K (so about 100K after hose replacement). No probs yet...

Anyone got a price on the OZ Samco hoses? Or do i have to get it from the US.

Rang the Jeep dealer to enquire about some radiator hoses as spares... $100odd each... phwoar - what a riiiiiip!

Funny that you say this. I bought my KJ second hand at 112,000 kms. It's sitting at 127,000ish km now and there is no problems with the boost hoses.

I too have noticed an orange circle on the cut-away view you get when you look closely at the hoses while they are attached...maybe the hoses aren't so easily broken anymore.

I am closely following the Samco hose kit and trying to find out if I want to buy them as preventive maintenance...
