Hi Guys,
I posed a question in another thread where I was asking about mods, but it was a bit stale, so I'm starting a new one.
I've read the stickies, and done some searches. I suspect there isn't a straightforward answer, but am interested in what people have to say.
My XJ Sport drags its guts too much, so I want it higher. I understand there are laws about how much you can modify your truck. I also understand there are limits as to what insurance companies will cover. I'm not looking for something to compete in, just making the little XJ a little more trail competent. I want to make sure I'm legal as I want to make sure insurance covers me if I collect a Rolls or injure someone.
I started by looking up the regs (I'm in Victoria) - "bump stop clearance is not to be modified more than 1/3 as spec'ed by the manufacturer"
I had no idea what that meant, so I called a shop that does lifts and they say - "We do mostly 2" kits as the laws are vague, but insurance companies won't touch over 2" lift"... right... so I call my insurance company - "we'll insure anything so long as it's legal" so I call vicroads safety/roadworthy line "we're not really sure what it means either - best call an engineer"
Which is sort of where I didn't want to get to. I wanted to do some lift without involving an engineer.
There are obviously lots of modded trucks out there - and I guess there are a bunch that don't have the same concerns as me, and that's cool, it's their lookout. But I am interested in what others have been through/found out can advise.
At this stage it looks like I need to call Jeep and find out what the factory spec is for the Sport, and/or call an engineer, which doesn't sound cheap to me.
I didn't think it would be this hard. Can anyone share some wisdom?
