Default JK engine number location for 3.8

The reason I'm posting this information is for anyone having to find a engine number on the 3.8 petrol motor in the Jk jeeps. I was having trouble locating the number for registration in my state. As a requirement for a roadworthy, the number must be visible to the registration authority. Until I could show its location to the roadworthy dude, no roadworthy, no registration As he had no idea where it was, I called several DC outlets who all said: lower passenger side of engine block. But F%#&ed if I could find it. By this stage I'm starting to pull me hair out That's until I called the boys up at Sunco Motors who went out of their way to fax me a pic of the location. It turned out to be, on the rear of the block (viewed from underneath, looking from the gearbox, towards the front of the vehicle) just below the head gasket line. It is obscured by a electrical connection, but is definitely there. DC recommend viewing this number with a mirror from the underside of the vehicle WTF! They really make it easy, don't they? Anyway, If your having trouble finding it, that's where it is.

Default JK diesel engine number

I'm in the process of registering my diesel JK - and I've just spent many hours at the local mechanics with 5 blokes trying to find the engine number... underneath with cameras and mirrors... up on the hoist. The mechanics have now given up. Other than ROBXJ's advice, has anyone got any more recent tips? Has anyone ever found the engine number on the diesel?

I had the same issue. They strippied parts off to find that number. It wasn't there.

It seems that many US states do not use or recognise them, so not all of the engines we get have them. Mine didn't & the RTA issued me a new engine number that the mechanic stamped on. (After it was checked by mechanic, RTA instection station & then stripped at the mechanic with RTA inspector there to verify!)

It's common for US engines not to have engine numbers, a lot of Chevs V8's & Ford V8' don't have them & have to get the block stamped here for registration

I want a front drive shaft so I can go 4 wheeling
