A MAN took a 12-year-old girl on weekend trips to a remote cabin where he sexually abused her, a court has been told.
Peter John Marshall, 39, was jailed for six years in the Brisbane District Court today for his abuse of the girl over a three-month period in early 2004.
He was found guilty on Wednesday of eight counts, including maintaining a sexual relationship with a child under 16 and four of indecent treatment of a child under 16 under care.
The verdict was handed down at the end of his fourth trial for these charges.
Prosecutor Michael Lehane told the court Marshall met the girl through her stepfather, and began grooming her for a relationship.
Mr Lehane said the girl came from a disadvantaged background and was particularly vulnerable to his advances because of a lack of attention at home from her mother, who was busy looking after a toddler.
The court was told Marshall gained the trust of the girl's mother and then started taking the child on weekend trips to a cabin located on his property at Mundoolun, southwest of Brisbane.
During the six trips he engaged in sexual activities with the girl, exposed her to pornography and taught her how to masturbate him.
The court was told he bribed her with gifts.
"He was very deliberate and calculating in his activities in exploiting this young girl," Mr Lehane said.
The court was told the abuse had a devastating impact on the victim, who has since committed acts of self-harm and talks of suicide.
Mr Lahane said Marshall had shown a complete lack of remorse for his actions, and that he was upset when the verdict was handed down, telling the jury: "You don't know the full story."
Marshall has spent two days in pre-sentence custody.
