Default Diesel XJ starter motor

1999 XJ 2.5L turbo diesel with a crapped-out starter motor. Had the Jeep dealer tell me a new one was worth $2500. Anyone know of a cheaper alternative? I notice another thread that states a possible bosch part... anyone with experience actually installing this part?

Engine has 167,000kms on it. What are the chances of being able to clean-up the current starter? It doesn't spin when I turn the key, just "clicks". I understand the motor is f'n hard to remove and don't want to pay 8 hours labour to access and fix-up a part that might die again.

Thanks.

Its a diesel XJ, get used to paying through the nose for every part.
Better still fix it and flog it, if its managed to survive 167000km it either has a re-built engine in it or will need one soon.
Does it actually run? IE can it be push started?

clicking normally means the solenoid ....

If YOU can get it out ... just take it too a auto leccie / rewind place and see what they can do for you ...

Just to add my 2c worth. When my starter was clicking like that, it was the battery. I presumed not enough grunt to throw the solenoid far enough. Anyway, after a jump start, then a new battery, all good.
I then dismantled the starter and cleaned/re-greased and it's even better.

Maybe I should add mine is the petrol........

Resurrecting this thread as it has the best title.

My TD has developed the sticking solenoid 'CLICK' does anybody have any updates to this tread that can help?

How hard is it to get off? Can I grease it up, can these be exchanged or rebuild by auto electrician? I live near Perth.

I've had the battery checked and all is good with that, I can release the solenoid with a sharp tap to the starter, hard to get though and my knuckles are suffering! How easy is it bump start the diesel…expect I find out pretty soon anyway.
