Default simpson trip preparation on a jk

Hey guys

my fellow jeepers. i do appreciate your help and ideas very much, and cannot do without you all.

I am set to explore the simpsons , kimberly stretching to queensland,, in 6 weeks time for a month or so.. i really need ideas with the setting up of my jeep. the trip requires a second spare wheel and a couple of other stuff. how would the hard top cope if i were to strap the spare wheel and an oztent rvs on the roof rails? i have not ordered the roof rails yet. my rig will be full packed so i am desperate for space. i am running 285/70 stt on stock rims and standard suspension, so doubting if the jeep will survive. your advise would be very much appreciated

Hey comptonx,

I see you say you haven't ordered roof rails yet, I would stay well away from a hardtop mounted roof rail system for what you want to carry up top. Look more to something like the Congo Cage or Gavin's Wilderness Rack. Wooders carries the Wilderness rack for the JK.

The hardtop just has too much flex and not enough strength to cope with the corrugations and the weight of a spare up top. Plus you can use a full cage set-up with whichever top you have on.

I've designed a rack, that incorporates a lightbar that gets left on the vehicle when the rack is removed. The goal I had was to have a completely bolt on system that bolts to the chassis at the back and uses the windshield mounts at the front, while still allowing mounting of a snorkel. It's off being quoted at the moment. I don't think that it will be ready to market by the time you are set to go though.

Hope this helps

Hey Jasper J, I'd be very keen to see your design when done.

ComptonX, do you need the back seats. A guy on here, Sabbatical (doesn't visit the site too often), took his out and made up an awesome storage area inc jerry can holders etc. PM me your e-mail address and I will forward the e-mail to you that he sent me. I'd also get a decent suspension set up, such as ARB (I have this set up with the same size STT's and it's never failed me).

I'd also get good front on protection with a bull bar, and also consider a snorkel for the dust.

Do you have the petrol or diesel - as there may be specific things that could help too.

Keep an eye on the Mt Dare road updates, located here:

http://www.mtdare.com.au/index.php?o...&id=3&Itemid=1

At present the QAA line is still closed due to flooding and the Eyre creek channel area is covered by about a kilometre of water. Thus Birdsville to Peopel Corner is not accessible. This is expected to drop over the coming months but many Simpson tagalong operators have cancelled cross desert trips for this year, so keep an eye on the road information. There is a KJ group trip happening in August and conditions are expected to be better by that time.

So you need one back seat? If you could take either of the two halves of rear seats out it would still open up a lot of extra space.
