Default Roof tyre mount, it's back in use, but is wise ?

Well I have had to move the 2OKG of spare tyre (tire) back on to the roof. I am building my off road trailer and found the spare is just plain getting in the way on the rear tyre carry (Mopar), so it is back on the roof for now. I did find the Mopar system worked OK, but it got in the way, the trailer has been final push.

I think it is on the limits of the gutter mount weight. I may move it back inside, but I do not know if it is worth it. Any one had problems with roof mounted tyres ? Any suggestions ?

I have 30" Maxxis Trepadors currently fitted. Roof mount last year

Are we talking about a tyre, or a spare wheel and tyre?

I used to carry two tyres on the roof on long outback trips, as well as the spare wheel and third tyre in the car. This was all on the default bars provided from the factory.

Never had a problemo, even on the heavily corrugated bomb roads out in the desert.

I think the weight limit for the roof is 75kgs on most vehicles, if not all....

Not because the gutters or racks can't take more, but for safety reasons.

I had a 33" tyre on the roof of my XJ most if the time i had it and didn't have a single issue at all and mine had 6" of lift and no swaybars. I did about 8 Wedge trips and a heap of rock crawling with it up there too.

Just watch for carparks, it suprising how low most of them are.

The Jeep owner's manual says 75kg on top. Shouldnt be an issue. I've considered doing it, so I can carry a jerry can or two on the rear wheel carrier.

Only issue we had was when the wife, distracted by wieidly 6mnth old & 2.5 year old kids in the back seat, forgot it was on the roof & drove into a multi level carpark, that was too low, & ripped it clean of the roof, carrier and all.
by the height indicator beam. That was 5.5 years ago now, but still run the spare up there with no other probs at all.

I run mine on the Mopar roof mounted carrier. Don't even notice it.

It slots into the factory tracks (removed the factory crossbars) and I have rhinoracks in the gutters.

(Mines the one on the left, obviously).

Even with the 2" ARB OME lift, it still comes in at under 2.1m. Fits in almost all carparks still.

Cool Thankz

Good feedback, All. Yes Rosie have been caught by that one forgot it was there and not on the back, however did realise just in time, CB rattle reminded me.

Heck Big Dave the way we have built the Thule rack I hope we don't that ! Thanks Eksjay and Disco for the tech.

Like the pic Dion, yep read about the Mopar bars on NAXJA, not easy to get here hence our custom Thule set up.
