Default Stuck Transfer

Gudday peoples.
Newby here needing some advice. I'm looking at Grand Cherokee Larado. 1996 model, petrol.
All seems to be ok, only the transfer is stuck in 4WD. I haven't physically looked at the vehicle, only talked to the dealer over the phone. All he can tell me is it's stuck in 4WD. He doesn't seem to understand FT4 and PT4, so I don't know which it is stuck in.
What are the causes for it to be stuck in 4WD?? Do you think it's still worth looking at? Or steer clear? The price seems good either way, depending of course on the cost of repair on the transfer.
Thanks for your insites,
cheers

I seem to recall my old 96 grandy only had 3 options 4H, Nutural and 4L as they are a constant 4wd it is always in 4H.

So if the lever is all the way forward it is in 4H which is where it is meant to be.

Also i seem to recall in orderto put it in 4L the engine needs to be running and the Auto in Nutural.

But check the linkages I had a problem whilst offroad one time something had come loose and once my mate got under and tightened it up all was fine.

Yer, neutral, push 4wd selector stick forward with engine running, put in drive, back to neutral, reverse, neutral and then drive again seems to work but the transmission on my jeep has been changed to part time 4wd since festa had it.

festa, quick question, are the grand cherokee's rancho shocks adjustable? The front seems alot harder than the rear or is that just the sway bar?

Also- crashed my work car, felt bad, offered to drive the jeep untill they get a new one, (needed no persuasion, any excuse i can find to drive it hehehe), Been working in rockingham and everyday i take "short cuts" through bush tracks in mundijong on my way to and from work. Cost me a lil bit to fix up but is definatly the best car ive ever bought, the apprentice want to get one, he loves it too lol!.

Here's a "short cut" i took today, barely had enough clearance over the higher part of the fallen tree, knocked the tail pipe a lil bit as the back wheels came down.
