Default Strange noise when accelerating!

Hi folks, I got a problem with the drive train in my 96 XJ. A few weeks ago I accidently had a moment of madness that lead to me overhauling the front diff centre. Everything on the front axle appears to be in order now.....

But now I have this noise on acceleration that almost disappears when cruising. This is in 2WD. In a way it sounds like the chain in the transfer case is loose. But I am not going to pull it out just to find all is OK! Damn noises can be hard to track.

After re-fitting the diff centre I greased all the nipples, topped up the transfer case as well as new oil for the front diff.

Anyone know what it is? Thanks

Have you driven without the front drive shaft in place to eliminate that?

Hi GoJeep, I reassembled the front axle whilst I had the centre out so I could move it around and the noise was there. I thought it was the splines on the half shafts flopping around at first, but I discounted that.

Are you suggesting it could be the transfer case to axle shaft?

Can be the double cardon in the front shaft. The centre joint does not have a grease nipple and dries out even if the unis each side are greased. A worn slip yoke causes vibes too. If you can push up and down on it and feel any movement, it needs to be replaced.

Hi folks, I finally got to work on th XJ this morning. Pulled the half shafts and the front driveshaft, put it all back together and went for a spin.......and the noise is still there! The uni's in the rear driveshaft are tight so I am leaning towards the transfer case. Which is a strange animal as there doesn't appear to be anywhere to adjust the tension on the chain! I got a horrible feeling someones going to tell me to pull the unit out and replace the chain!

Lurking in the back of my mind is something else. It would be unusual for the torque convertor to come loose on the flex plate, but i was wondering if there have been problems with flex plates cracking which allow the torque convertor to move.

Anyone can chirp in here. I could do with some advice.

I have a similar noise in mine that has been getting gradually worse unitl I went up the cape and now it is quite bad so tomorrow the transfer case is coming out and swapping it over with another one so it will be interesting to see if the noise changes....
