Default FSJ ball joint question

hi i am replacing the ball joints my 1981 cherokee. it has the open knuckle type of diff. it is all fairly straight forward except for one question about the adjuster sleeve which the top ball joints slides into.

my aftermarket book says that the adjustment of this sleeve is important, as it controls the amount of preload between the two ball joints. it does not elaborate beyond that, but says to consult the jeep manual for torque settings

the jeep manual (near useless chiltons pos) says simply to screw the adjuster in flush with the top axle yoke, and says nothing about torque, or any adjustment procedure. the manual does, however, elsewhere have a section for 'upper ball joint - adjustment' which tells you how to use a torque wrench to measure force required to turn the knuckle, but again, gives no procedure or parameters for actually adjusting anything.

so question is this: when i screw the adjuster sleeve back in, then refit the knuckle and ball joints, what, if any, adjustment is required to the position of this adjuster sleeve?

many thanks.
