Default Automatic gearbox problem

Hi fellas,
Posted this earlier in another section without replies so will try in tech section.
Hav 1995 cherokee sports, developed a problem 6 mths ago. When pullin up to standstill the box drops to 1st for a moment then goes into 3rd. I can manually put the box into 1st/2nd and take off in 1st then move shifter to 3rd which box goes to 2nd then shift to D n box goes to 3rd n 4th. Changed auto box oil, changed TPS and plugged in different TCU with no change.
Soliends in box i figure mayb next choice?? Any1 with sum ideas plz tell. Can 1 test soliends in box by applyin 12v to check if they open. Any info grateful.
cheers chris

I think solonoids are 5v ie switched via TCM.
Also line pressure solonoid is switched rapidly like an injector to control pressure.
If it works manually then all the clutch solonoids are working but it sounds like TCM sees a fault & is going into limp home mode.
I would start by getting the fault codes retrieved.

Have you tried the turn ign on -off 3 times trick to retrieve codes?
I know this doesnt work on early XJs but not sure what date they changed exactly.

95 xj requires a DRB2 scan tool and cartridge that only a jeep dealer will have, or maybe the guy at western suburbs automatics. they only give a few fault codes anyway and most things can be checked with a multimeter and the service manual. the sensors involved are the tps the neutral safety switch the brake pedal switch ,speed sensor and the 3 solenoids in the auto. all these can be checked without taking the pan off the auto. mine did the same thing on the trail one day but came good. I will be interested to find out what is wrong with yours. seems the computer is not happy with one of the sensors and has gone into limp mode as stated above. have you cleaned out the neutral safety switch? the speed sensor must be working as the speedo I take it is working. you have replaced the tps , sort of points to the solenoids. have you disconnected the battery to reset the auto computer.

Hi fellas,
Ok, limp mode so a sensor throwin things out (sumtimes i think these computer cars r over sensitive, lol) I did the igition thing n can codes 12 which in my simple manuel saids it dosnt throw but for the model b4 mine?? and means start of codes, and 55 which is the finished code. Hav disconnected battey n reconnectted etc to reset comp. When mine first started to go into this limp mode, at first it was on n off now always in this mode. Interested in how the soliends r tested with multimeter without pan off xjdavid but first of all would like to try cleanin the neutral safety switch out. Can u tell me how this is done plz etc.
cheers chris
