Default Trying to do it right the first time...

Hey fellas,
I've come full circle on the RC idea for maybe the third time in as many years.

Been doing alot of reading and searching forums mostly about the 1.9 scalers. I came across a Newbright JT / Brute custom build that looks awesome and I'd like to have a go at building my own truck over time.

The Axial SCX10 seems like a solid platform that alot of people are happy with.

My questions:
- What would YOU use as a base platform?
- What battery and controller would you use?
- Do you think the stock SCX10 gearing / motor / servo / esc etc would be reasonable? (For 100% crawling).

There's a huge amount of factory options and 5 billion custom builds... In depth I'm new to this, it's beginning to hurt my brain a bit.

Any help would be greatly appreciated fellas,
Thanks
Jim

I used the scx10 for the base for my jeep build. Very happy with it and lots of upgrades for it now. Like Chassis mounted steering. You can also buy leaf spring kits for it. Im about to put leaf on the rear of mine.
Another choice is the axial honcho kit. This just has an extra inch of wheelbase over the scx10. The honcho is 12" I think. Depends what wheelbase you are going for.
As for battery and controller. I just use 2s lipo's and a TQ3 controller. I use the 3rd channel for my winch.
One good upgrade you might want to get when you get the kit, is new shocks. The stock plastic ones are junk. I use the proline 90mm shocks. Smooth as.
Stock gearing is good. I use a 30t motor and this gives the truck good top end speed but still crawls. But a good speed controller makes all the difference too. Look up LRP. They have awsome speedy's. You can setup braking, accelaration etc.
Also saw one of the Jk shells on ebay the other day. They are hard to find.
Hope this all helps. Pm me if you need more info.

Awesome mate, thanks alot!
I'll have a look at the shocks and controllers when I get home from Taco Bill

What charger and batteries are you using? Do you run one or two?

Been looking at the newbright JK bodies on US Ebay, around $100ish landed by the looks of things. Do you think the SCX10 or Honcho wheelbase would be better for that? Apparently alot of people cut theirs down to fit the scx10... Not sure how much of an issue it is though.

Much appreciated Kizzo, pity you're in NSW...

Im using the venom charger. Great charger, all micro chip contrlled, and does all batteries. And Im just using cheap lipos I bought off ebay from hong kong. I have 2. They last for ages and are heaps lighter than Nihm batts.
As for the JK body. The honcho would be better cause the newbright jk's need like a 13" wheelbase standard. So not as much stretching needed. Plus you get some cool stuff with the honcho kits like lights and bars etc.

Decide if you want a scaler that looks the goods, or one that can wheel hard. I went from starting mine to look the goods, and as I tweek more and more its becoming more a rockcralwer and will possibly even up with with full tube chassis as current rate.

Yes they scale ones look awesome, but they are limited in enjoyment factor on what they can drive and when they fall over things on the body break

You can get a compromise in drivability and looks. The hard bodies are really well built and can handle some really hard knocks. I run mine in comps and its the only hard body rig there. So far I have won the last 2 scale comps I went in. The only thing I change for the comps is I run the 1.9 Roc lox. If you set them up well, they will perform well.
