First off, there 2 models (which come with various amounts of memory) to choose from.
The WiFi version doesn't have a GPS support, but seems like it can pull rough location data from networks, perhaps also from the compass (if it's included).
The 3G+WiFi version does have A-GPS (assisted GPS).
To use the iPad as a decent GPS, you'll need the 3G version.
That'll mean another sim card contract or plan.
Then consider that the iPad pricing for Australia still hasn't been
released nor has the release date, other then 'late April'.
Then, you'll need the TomTom software, or 1 of the other GPS apps,
so that's another $100 odd.
The iPad is not really designed for what you're thinking of.
But good luck if you can make it work in a manageable way.
