Default iPad in the Jeep?

I have been thinking about what I want in terms of media, navigation and ease of use and the iPad has ticked quite a few boxes. Only problem I still see is that you will still need to upload and change yourmusic from a laptop/pc when you get sick of your current playlists.

I really like the idea of the laptop hooked up to the touchscreen on the dash like Steve F did, but its also more work to hook up.

Getting ideas sorted and just wanted to see if any body here had any ideas or feedback?

Cheers

First off, there 2 models (which come with various amounts of memory) to choose from.
The WiFi version doesn't have a GPS support, but seems like it can pull rough location data from networks, perhaps also from the compass (if it's included).
The 3G+WiFi version does have A-GPS (assisted GPS).

To use the iPad as a decent GPS, you'll need the 3G version.
That'll mean another sim card contract or plan.
Then consider that the iPad pricing for Australia still hasn't been
released nor has the release date, other then 'late April'.

Then, you'll need the TomTom software, or 1 of the other GPS apps,
so that's another $100 odd.

The iPad is not really designed for what you're thinking of.
But good luck if you can make it work in a manageable way.

The GPS chip is on both models, however the accuracy of the GPS does tend to be a little out. Somtimes by a street or more (on my iPhone anyway) I guess thats why TomTom released their own cradle with inbuilt reciever for the GPS to get a better signal.

Sorry Rollas, but that's not correct.

With the iPad, only the 3G+WiFi model has full A-GPS support.
if you look here it states clearly that A-GPS is only on the 3G model.

I'd guess that the WiFi model will rely on the compass to make use of google maps etc???

I am going to get an iPad when the come out, the 3G WIFI model and mount it in the JK. I use the iPod at the moment and the screen is too small and difficult to use when the car is moving (even for the passenger).

The applications that I have on the iPhone 'should' be installable on the iPad when it comes out...

I see your right, I thought the WiFi + 3G meant it was on both models. However looking at it now I see it means Assisted GPS on WiFi + 3G models.

However for the cradle "The built-in GPS receiver enhances the GPS signal, especially in areas where GPS reception is limited i.e. high rises
" taken off the TomTom website. (http://www.tomtom.com/products/produ...tegory=2&Lid=1)

So I guess if I need the additional SIM to be able to use the GPS then its F#$%ed anyway cause I am not paying for two SIM cards!

So looks like the Car P.C is the way to go then.

Jeepology,

Nope, that's not correct either.

Quote:
Assisted GPS, generally abbreviated as A-GPS, is a system which can improve the startup performance of a GPS satellite-based positioning system. It is used extensively with GPS-capable cellular phones as its development was accelerated by the U.S. FCC's 911 mandate making the location of a cell phone available to emergency call dispatchers.[1]
So, it's still a GPS receiver, but has assistance from the cell network.

rollas,

or a netbook perhaps?
