Default rear speaker sound quality

does anybody know how to make the rear speakers that are mounted in the roof sound good?
i just replaced the stock infinity speakers with a set of fusions and the result was really disapointing. they sound pretty much the same as the stockers.
theres nothing in the roof cavity, im thinking it needs some sort of insulation stuffed in there?
any thoughts or ideas appreciated

Best bet due to the lack of space in the sound bar is to forget the stock positions all together and use the tailgate or the rear doors.
Better still forget the rear speakers and use better front ones, most of the best sounding car sound competition cars don't run rear speakers at all...

Fill it full of self expanding foam and make a gap around the speakers.

I would personally (being in this industry) buy sound deadner and put it behind the speakers and around inside the roof bar, purchase a good set of splits/2 ways (will have a woofer and either a tweeter built on top of the cone or separate, and pay MIN $120 RRP for them... You will notice the difference, and depending on how large speaker cable is going to them from the front, if the same size as the front i wouldn't bother... But as all bass passes through surfaces as its resonance is quite large (wave sign is long) passes through thin not so dense material, deadner works well...

Diggers is dead on!
If you know somebody who can fiberglass well and don't mind not having a rooflining for a few days, I would sugest glassing atleast 500mm around the holes on the hoodlining and adding sound deadner to the actual (steel) roof!
Where your fibre glass ends add in some dense foam/styraphoam,
I haven't pulled mine off to have a look yet but even if possible add 1 or 2 alloy strips (2mm thick) from left to right accross following the contours of the headlining to add extra support to help stop sag!
Just before you reinstall I would lay some speaker foam (like a pillow filler but very loose (helps with bass).

If you don't want to go that far.
Put sound deadner on the upper (steel) roof,
get some foam/ matting as previously mentioned,
wire up an amp, put it back together,
probably 30% better sound for the rear passengers,

at the end of the day they probably won't be better then any door speaker as the roof space is frig all...

Or buy an amp and a sub and some more tweeters!

Also probably keep the amps small in size unless your thinking of building a false floor in the back, not much room to hide stuff in xj's unfortunatly.
My rant over!
