Default New v Reco Gearbox

Hi All,
Well it looks like I may need to get my gearbox replaced. I spoke to Hammonds the other day about the issues i'm having and they reckon it is probably the Torque Converter on its way out. So my question is.
Do I get the gearbox reco'd or replaced? What are the pro's and cons of each?

Also, are there any suggestions as to where to get the work done? Hammonds are 1 option, a little far from home, but do-able. I'd prefer somewhere closer to Browns Plains though... and I dont have the confidence in Jeep at Mansfield as they had the car 2 weeks ago and didnt pick the problem up, even after I told them what was happening.

cheers
Rossow.

I'd want to know why they think the TC needs replacing. The TC is a dumb device all the logic is done elsewhere (TCM, valve body, solenoids, etc). Clutch packs can go. What are your symptoms?

Start the car after a few hours of sitting still (8 hours) and put it into reverse... nothing. give it some accel. and it drops into gear and goes. Happens in Drive as well some times. I read a few other posts about this issue on here and they (flyboy? from memory?) had their TC and Gearbox replaced under warranty... unfortunately mine is a 01-06 model and out of warranty.

Am up for suggestions if you think there is something else I can try. I took it to Jeep and they flashed the TCM but it still happens... just not as roughly.

Rossow, The guy to ask is crdjon, he had a lot of stuff done to his CRD, including a Hemi TC and some other stuff. PM him, and see what he thinks. As a general rule, it may not be the entire box that needs fixing, could also just be the solinoid pack, A few of the Petrol guys have had to replace their Autos, but I have not heard of too many CRD's with the same issues.

PM crdjon.

The anti-drainback valve might be the culprit. The TC can lose fluid if left to sit. Try this:

Start the car and let it idle for at least thirty seconds before you put it into gear (this allows the pumps to refill the lines and TC). Put it into gear and see what happens. If this technique eliminates the problem then it is likely just the antidrainback valve (which I think can be fixed with a simple filter service).

If the TC has a leak in the housing then yes that will require the TC to be pulled, but try the test above first.

When was the last time the auto was serviced? Maybe the solution is as easy as a new set of filters (both of them) and a good ole cleanout out the box (i.e. a flush if you reckon the oil is dirty.) Could be that theres some crap floating around in the oil blocking the ports. I wouldn't go reco-ing anything unless there was crazy grinding noise, burnt oil etc etc. The cost of a new box (or even a s/h one) is insanely huge.
