Default my fuel gauge has gone nuts.

My fuel gauge in the 99 diesel xj has gone a bit troppo..
It was about half way through the tank.. then bang.. it went right past full.. then every now and then the gauge goes back to empty.. but the fuel light doesn't come on..

I shut her down and restarter, no luck.. same thing.. but now it doesn't even go back to half way, just alternates between full and empty...
Any ideas?

And also check the wiring and the connector at the tank.

ok so to add more to this story..
When I fill the tank up it actually shows full, and then goes down.. at about the right rate.. but when it get to just over half way, this is when it stuff's up.. So I suspect it's either something electrical or the gauge in the tank it self?

mine has done this for awhile. I suspect it is the sender unit in the tank but since I am more inclined to trust the trip meter than the fuel guage I have never investigated, sorry
