Default RYCO Z631 question

I've read the posts regarding the Z631 oil filter not having some type of internal valving when compared to a mopar filter. Although the Z631 does have an anti-drainback valve. I've also looked inside a Z596 and the inside certainly looks different. Anyone know why RYCO would specify the Z631 for the 3.7 KJ if it's missing a vital component? Given that it sits almost upright in the 3.7 I wonder if it's an issue anyway.

I only ask because before I purchased my KJ I asked that the dealer do an oil change. (most of my servicing equipment is 1000 miles away). Interestingly enough, a Jeep dealer did the service, and it still has a ryco Z631 filter on it.. they certainly changed the oil, but I forgot to check the filter brand beforehand.

Any thoughts/comments?

Default Ryco Oil Filter

I have used the Z631 for about 12 months and have just changed to a Mopar. I must say that I never noticed any difference-- no rattles on start up or any other problems. Your point that the filter is mounted fairly upright may be the factor in having no problems. I have just bought half a dozen AC Delco filters from the US for about $8 each so that will be my next direction for filters and I am happy not to be feeding the local stealerships. barryh

Hi Barry

How have the ac delco filters gone for you. Do they have the internal valve (like the ryco z596)? What website did you purchase them from?

Thanks
Kim

Default ac delco oil filters

Hi Paul
I can't help you with the ac delco performance as I have been seriously out of action with my hands(tendons) for a few months and I really have not driven the Jeep. Looking at them, all I can say is that they are different to filters I have for a 240z, 300zx,Mazda3 and 200sx, but I do think they have a form of drainback valve--can't be sure though. I chose them because they are a GMH brand and I have had my share of Holdens over the years. As I indicated earlier I have used the Ryco previously with no problems at all so I am not at all worried that they will not suit.
I bought them at Car Stuff-Liberty Parts in US and as I remember they had at least 10 brands for you to choose from, with a range of prices.(none as dear as genuine here).
I bought a heap of genuine parts at Jeep Parts USA at really great prices--you need to download a parts list online. Of course the delivery adds significantly, but for my parts I was still well in front. I had Bongo deliver in about 6 days. barryh--Adelaide

Hi,

A Jeep dealer put a Ryco filter on? Not allowed as far as I know. Ryco filters are NOT what I would put on any car! Jeep dealers have to use Mopar bits. The Mopar filters are good and they ain't expensive.

I'm fairly sure the Jeep dealer didn't even change the filter. Anyway, my wife picked up a couple of mopar filters from Mansfield in Brissy when she was up there, and i've since fitted one with a fresh oil change.

Speaking of oil changes, just as i was preparing to get an "oil bath" under the car when undoing the filter I was pleasantly surprised by the KJ's unique little oil drain channel under the filter adapter. bloody good idea..

Hi.

I am doing my first oil change, currently there is a ryco 596 filter being used, as that's what was on it when I got the jeep. I went to a jeep dealer to get a new filter and they gave me a filter cartridge which goes inside the filter housing (which I had not seen before). I explained that there is a ryco filter on it right now and I don't have the original filter housing. So they gave me a price on the original filter housing to get it back to standard and that was $600, which is crazy.

Does this sound right?

Can I get a second hand filter housing? Or should I just use an after market filter like the Ryco one?

I have read about the difference between the ryco 631 and 596, but also last post said that ryco is not a good one at all.

What should I go with?
