Hi,

I am looking at buying a 1999 Jeep Cherokee 2.5TD with 200 000kms on it.

Does anyone have any info on these?

Reliability, strength, offroad ability, fuel consumption and generally how they run? Any common problems? Anything to look for on inspection?

Also anything to look for in particular when i check it out?

any help would be great!

oh and its manual

Plenty of issues; the big ones being diff carrier & pinion bearings. Be wary buying the diesel model. Because the engines can be problematic if they have not been treated well over the years. The 4.0 is a safer choice as the 4.0s don't usually have too many issues.

unless it has had a single owner that has been obsessive compulsive about the maintenance. or you are a mechanic/ really good on the spanners.
think real long and hard about it...................
This is a starting point.

All TD's are manual.
If you are a diesel type of person they are what you will expect.
I get about 9.5 l/100km from mine.
The heads can be a problem.
If its well maintained & you look after it, you will be fine.
Look for coolant in the cooling system, not rusty water.
Look for rear main seal leak.
Long cranking to start is probably caused by an air leak around the primer pump plunder.
Push it hard on a hot day & make sure it doesnt get too hot.
Other jeep stuff like AG mentioned.
At 200,000 km it will probably soon need a new clutch ~ $600 for kit.

Check the injector pump to make sure its not leeking. if you run it for a few minutes you will be able to see if it is leeking. if leeking its about $1500 job including labour for a new pump.

Where are you located?

All Xj Td's are manual update models, the rest are 4l petrol autos...
