I just think another design fail being that the standard 18" has always been 265 60R18 and it doesn't fit, its too wide but the steel rim with the Original 245 65R18 fits ............. though both tyres are near enough to identical other than width of tread.
Options to make it fit is let down the tyre, what a pain to stuff around with though depends how much needs to be let out more than I want I think........ I'm leaning to make a new fake floor surround so the lid fits flush again, since I throw a 60lt water tank in the back for touring it needs to be a proper job, as it is the tank when filled would soon destroy things.................depending on how inspired I get maybe just do a whole new fake floor and use the empty space for sticking spare parts and just in case bits............... thinking cap on................"Its On The List"...

True...rolling diameter is the same which is not the problem...the 275/65/18 is close to an inch wider than a 255/70/18...plus in my case also sit on a 9" rim not 8" as standard...hence does not fit flush in the well...

I let all the air out of the spare...even 10psi affects the sidewall bulge...it takes no more than a couple of minutes to pump up from "flat"...(I don't break the bead.)

Besides, I have a pull out drawer with a compressor, and tools on one side on top of the spare well, and a fridge on the other side...so IF I ever have to take out the spare it is a major exercise anyway...pumping it up is just thing to take place while I put the flatty back in to the well and replace all the bits on top...lol

That said I have thought about making up a new hinged floor over the top of the spare, but I would still have to take out the drawers and fridge to lift up for access so haven't bothered...

I rarely ever use the spare, other than times when Ive ripped a huge slice in the thing (bloody cattle grids) I just plug 'em sometimes may need 2 plugs to seal the bugga................. regular checks mean I spot the screw/nail before it digs its way in....... besides by the time I have dug the spare out if away, don't come too close we could be nasty.... a wind down would be far better....

"Taa Daa "....................... Problem Solved in 30 mins .............. Drum Roll Please..

I have fitted the 265 60R18 tyre on a standard 8" rim in the tyre well so the lid shuts flat ....................

Pulled everything out under the lid, threw the spare in and used a straight edge to see whats what, found the front is pretty well right but the rear is high, obvious option that came to mind was the old trick of give wheel well a massage with 5lb knockometer but I flipped the wheel over so the nice side was showing, the straight edge was nice and level then, the stupid Jeep killa jack was the problem but wrapped it in a sand bag and it fits inside the rim, zip tied in place, just, side boxes fit in and the lid sits flush as before..... the styro pod that carried the jack and other bits had to be left out though................ I will get the sizing of the hold down bolt and make a longer one which if goes to plan will stop the jack rattling as well ...............
As the sound of trumpets recede I might grab a well earned beer ...........

My wife's ASX has a Accessory Kit thru Spares @ Mitsubishi which physically raises the floor in the cargo area to allow a full size 18" alloy spare and tyre to fit where the space saver is, just a thought as I reckon something along the same set up would sort the Jeep out, it only raises it by an inch or so

At least some manufacturers think outside the box! My better half's new Mazda 3 has a "space saver" spare... the well in the bottom of the hatch will not fit a standard sized spare wheel in it full stop, it is designed for a skinny smaller "space saver" wheel only and that is it.
