Default Should I buy a cherokee

Hi guys,

Im new here and also looking at buying a jeep sometime down the line.Last time when I was in the market,I backed off coz of the bad press cherokee was getting ..wherever I read about it. Somehow in the US many years back,I used to drive them and they had no issues. Why are there so many issues that people write about in oz land? Have they got any better now coz i noticed a lot of new jeeps out in parramatta(NSW) area where I live? Obviously no one sinks in 35 grand or more on something thats dodgy and will give nightmares in repairs later.I dont look at offroading more than once a month and want a smooth drive on bitumen(I drive a ford G6 now). All comments/suggestions welcome.Ta

If you are happy to spend lots on repairs then get a Jeep. I have spent well over 2k doing the normal repairs on the 98 XJ and still have another 1-2k still just getting the normal problems sorted and that's not getting the trick stuff. Mind you most of the repairs I have done myself and I have spent well in excess of 400hrs of my own time doing repairs and a couple of minor upgrades eg, aux tank for gas.

However on the good side Jeeps are fairly easy to work on compared to say lateish model Fords. As for normal on-road I have found it pretty good. It handles really well has a fantastic turning circle, which is better than an 02 model Camry, which is our other car. The mods are endless and will only depend on your final budget after the problems have been sorted.

To sum it up from the factory Cherokees are not great. However if you are willing to spend the big biccies and replace the normal inadequate factory parts with high quality OEM then you can end up with a Jeep that can go anywhere, and still have a few niceities.

That my 2 bobs worth, most would agree some may not.

All the best on your final decision.

Kindest regads Anthony

XJ's are very capable off road. I got mine for wheeling. I find it easy to work on. The wheel base is spot on. As for repairs, I don't care, its a jeep thing.

Ignore the press. Toyotas always get a good write up even though some models have been garbage. Advertising dollars have a lot to do with reviews.

i have had 2 jeeps with minimal issues.

You need to understand that typically people will post problems not how well things are going so forums and alike will always be skewed to the issues and not how great they are in any make of vehicle.

From my experience Jeeps have been relaible (wranglers anyway) so i would have no hesitation in buying a third one.
You will always get the odd one telling you that if you want it to cost you money then buy it, they had a bad run..bugger but to generalise it is not helpful to anyone.

Do your research and buy accordingly based on your own observations and research
