engine coolant; transmission cooling; turbo intercooler; Whats the 4th one for, power steering?
I haven't heard of anyone having engine temp problems in a Grand or Commander except when the radiator was blocked with bugs or mud.
Have there been problems with the transmissions over heating?

The transmission fluid gets hot from converting engine power into propulsion power.
The more fluid that is available to absorb the heat generated, the better.
If less fluid is used, it still has to absorb the same amount of generated heat, therefore it gets hotter.
The cooling system also copes better, as it has forced circulation, the oil is returned to a larger pan and its residence time is increased.
Therefore it sits for a longer time, before it is returned to the torque converter, where work(heat) is added.
Simple thermodynamics.
The standard NAG1 (merc 5G) has 12 or 13 litres of oil from memory, which is a lot, it was used behind the V12 Merc engines.
This gearbox was used even when a newer box the Merc 7G gearbox was introduced.
The reason for using the NAG1 it was rated to 1079NM the newer 7G was only rated to 735 NM.
The only possible downside to adding a further 3 litres would be the decreased ground clearance.
As for the towing situation, it would just further enhance an extremely strong gearbox.
Only my humble opinion.
