Default WH CRD coolant smell?

G'day All,

I did a quick search and couldn't find much so thought I'd put it up.

The other week towing my boat north for a well earned reef trip, I idled the car and turned it off to fuel up and grab some ice. It wasn't a hot day (27°) but when i went to restart it was the slowest crank ever and took about 5 to 7 seconds to eventually fire up into life. It did this at the servo an hour north and also again at the boat ramp while i was unrigging etc.

The battery is fine and not very old, nor was i runnings lights. Driving up from the sunny coast to townsville without a load was fine a month prior. Any clues as to why it does this?

Also, it's registered as '09 built 08 but no DPF in sight, and Some days at the back of the car almost smells like old school coolant when I'm leaning over hooking up a trailer (not to admit to sniffing exhaust pipes here...)

Coolant levels haven't moved nor is oil off colour - so I'm wondering is it just the way the diesel burns in these things? I had a 2013 triton before this and smelt like diesel with nice plumes of smoke on takeoff but this has nothing. Anyone else had a similar smell or can put my mind at ease please?

Cheers

Zacman

Check the battery earth to the engine block, if it comes loose it causes a high resistance in the starter motor circuit (not enough umph to kick it over).
You should be able to check this by putting a single jump lead from the "-" (negative) on the battery to the engine block or the starter motor housing.

You said your battery is good, how many CCA's is it? Should be minimum 800cca.

Coolant smell
Don't know Just continue to monitor the coolant bottle for oil contamination or fluid loss.

Mine smells the same on start up in the garage. Definitely not the usual diesel smell.
These engines run very clean ,mine has a DPF.. I dont see any black smoke unless real heavy going with the camper on the back and foot down .Wouldnt have thought a Triton should be smoking on take off..!! Check charging rate

Awesome Clarky thanks mate. I checked grounding as first measure when I returned and all was secure. Batt is only 750cca :/ I just thought a hot start would be easier than cold is all. I have always ran big century batts in my boats, would you suggest a start batt for the WH? Its only 90aH i think not really not that flash as an aux either. Will check charge on the weekend

And yes the triton on vortex puffed - on stock BP diesel sometimes plumed. Was horrible some days.

Cheers guys

Yes the diesel Commander had a sweet smell to the exhaust fumes. Definitely not a typical diesel smell.
